INFO:
Joachim Pease: A Cape Verdean whaler, US Navy Sailor, Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Joachim Pease lived a life on the sea. Born in Fogo, Cape Verde, he joined a Whaling Ship out of New Bedford, and then became a Civil War Hero. He was a vital part of the USS Kearsarge, and sunk the CSS Alabama. He was awarded a US Medal of Honor, but never received it after disappearing from public record. Pease’s story is part of our exhibition “All Hands” exploring the story of whalers and their connections with the US Navy. The exhibition remains on display through September 8, 2024. 📷: Naval History and Heritage Command
